History & Philosophy

Domaines Bonfils is a family business, that has been growing grapes since 1870. Joesph Bonfils, a young teacher, challenged the regime in place and participated in the Paris Commune. He was forced into exile in Algeria, where he met his future wife, Honorine Dorvaux, a descendant of Alsace. In Mostaganem, a small town on the Mediterranean coast not far from Oran, the climate is rough, the soil is hard but the plateau fertile because the river generously waters the crops. It was Honorine who at the time launched the farm with many vines. It then plants without relentlessness, without knowing that it is in the process of growing the Bonfils heritage.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Jean-Michel sons took over the destiny of Domaine de Cibadiès, Laurent, Olivier and Jérôme. Three boys in the vines, each son a domain and own prerogatives. Jèrôme watches over the vineyard, Olivier on vinification and Laurent manages the marketing and management of the Bonfils Vineyards. Complementary, shared responsibility, entrepreneurial willingness... more than a family tied by challenges and challenges, Bonfils are a real team and always make big decisions together. A true family spirit!

This prosperous period experienced a halt during the declaration of Algeria's independence in 1962. It was then necessary to leave the land planted by Honorine, the first woman to receive the Medal of Agricultural Merit in 1875. The properties and the lands were nationalized and the Bonfils lost everything, obliged to return to France.

Their grandson, Jean-Michel Bonfils, was surrounded in his father's vineyard and cellar. He followed his parents who settled near Béziers. The construction of the Bonfils Vineyards is progresses slowly over the years going from strength to strength. Initially, Jean-Michel bought 6 hectares of vines in Languedoc with a repatriated loan. This is the Domaine du Lirou. He quickly added a 10 hectare farm and purchased new plots as opportunities grew. In 1978, he bought the Domaine de Cibadiès in Capestang in the Hérault, today the headquarters of the Bonfils Vineyards.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Jean-Michel's son Laurent, then 25 years old and freshly graduated from Dauphine, took over the destiny of Domaine de Cibadiès. With the help of his elder brother, Olivier, he decides to value the production and starts the sale in bottles. Then it will be Jérôme's turn to join the company. Three boys in the vines, each son a domain and their own prerogatives. Jérôme watches over the vineyard, Olivier on vinification and Laurent manages the marketing and management of the Bonfils Vineyards. Complementary, shared responsibility, entrepreneurial willingness... more than a family tied by challenges, Bonfils is a real team always making decisions together. A true family spirit!


Vineyard & Climate

The business comprises 19 Domaines and Chateaux, 17 of which are in the Languedoc with 1800 hectares of vineyards, making them one of the largest independent grape-grower/wine producers in France. The Domaine de Cibadiès covers 95 hectares to the west of Béziers, in the commune of Capestang (between the canal du Midi and the Oppidum of Ensérune) and is ideally situated between the sea and the Mediterranean scrub-lands. Acquired by the family in 1979, Domaine Cibadiès is at the origin of the Bonfils Philosophy: Varietals are matched to soil-types to obtain the best results for each wine. The company HQ, is also the home of Laurent Bonfils, current CEO of the company.

Capitoul Les Terrasses

                    
Chardonnay-Viognier
Nose of great aromatic complexity: peaches, apricots, white flowers, citrus fruits, sweet spices.
Merlot
A very expressive nose, exhaling large notes of small red and black fruits mixed with the more complex fragrances of spices.
Sauvignon
On the palate this Sauvignon enjoys a beautiful vivacity, on notes of grapefruit and acacia flower, and gives a pleasant sensation of freshness to finish.

Syrah-Grenache
Scented and spicy scents in the nose, with a background of small red fruits.

It is very nice in the mouth, with good acidity bringing a pleasant freshness.
Rochaille Rouge
This wine gradually delivers a powerful nose mixing black fruits and spices.

Chateau de Vaugelas


Cuvee "V" AOC
The aromas are ripe red fruits, dark chocolate and sweet spices. A mineral touch seems to float on this palate.
Le Prieuré
Aromas of red fruits and cherries with brandy. Accompanied by vanilla notes and soft liquorice.
