History & Philosophy
Marqués de Riscal is the oldest winery in Rioja, founded in Elciego (Álava) in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga. It is home to the City of Wine designed by world renowned architect, Frank Gehry, which captures their tradition and pioneering spirit. Pioneers of D.O. Rueda, Riscal have always been an innovating, pioneering cellar in a constantly changing winemaking sector. They seek to make wines which are original, fresh, elegant and easy to drink.
Vineyard & Climate
The grapes used to make Marqués de Riscal wines are grown in 1,500ha, and this sub zone of the Rioja Alesa has traditionally been best known for producing wines with good ageing potential, thanks to the high acidity and good tannin structure of the musts obtained.
205ha of the vineyards are dedicated to the growing of their white wines and Vinhos de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal currently own another 198ha of vines in the districts of Toro and San Román de Hornija, which belong to the Toro appellation.
Frank Gehry Selection
A wine that stands out for its stunning colour, showing elegance and determination, fruits, flowers and minerality. It is recognised as one of the greatest wines in the last half century of the winery and in Spain.
Barón de Chirel Reserva
Produced on a very limited scale and only in the best vintage years. It is a dark cherry in colour, with a high aromatic intensity in which the toasted and spicy aromas from the French oak predominate.
Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva
Grapes from vines over 80 years old are used to produce this wine, and following this it will age for between two and a half and three years. This is a very elegant wine, with a complex nose and aromas of black fruit and lots of spice.
Produced from the Tempranillo and Graciano grapes grown in the classic clay limestone of Rioja Alvesa. It has an intense nose, with hints of dark fruit, spices and slight toast nuances.
Marqués de Riscal Reserva
Made mainly from grapes from Tempranillo vines planted before the 1970's, grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa. The Graciano and Mazuela varieties provide crispness and a lively colour. Expressive aromas on the nose with notes of liquorice, cinnamon and black pepper with a subtle hint of the long cask ageing. Fresh and easy to drink on the palate, good backbone and lovely, polished tannins.
Marqués de Riscal Rosé
Created by the traditional method of bleeding the must, achieving an intense, bright, lively raspberry colour.
The nose has a marked Verdejo varietal aroma and medium intensity and hints of fennel herbs, white blossom, pear and peach. This wine does not aim to impress with a powerful nose, but rather reveals a more elegant, complex varietal character.
Marqués de Riscal Limousin
Made using carefully selected Verdejo grapes from old, goblet-pruned vines, grown in the best gravel soil of the highest terraces of the Duero valley.
Marqués de Riscal Sauvignon Blanc
Originally from the Loire Valley region, this grape variety was introduced in Rueda in 1974. It has a very complex nose with hints of fresh grass and citrus fruits, pineapple and melon.
Marqués de Riscal Rueda
A versatile grape with a lot of character and personality, it is very well suited to the extreme conditions of the region. Its nose has high aromatic intensity, with tropical fruits and hints of fennel and fresh grass.

Barón de Chirel Verdejo
The wine obtained has a dense mouthfeel, long and full of flavours. Its natural acidity, thanks to the altitude of the plots, some of them at 900m, ensures it will continue to develop in the bottle.
Marqués de Riscal 1860 Tempranillo
This wine has been created within the framework of freedom from winemaking regulations using carefully selected Tempranillo grapes. Highly aromatic, with aromas of stewed red fruit, hints of burnt chocolate, black pepper and smoky oak.
