History & Philosophy

Bodegas Tobía is a recent newcomer to Rioja. Established in 1994, its founder and moving spirit is Oscar Tobía, who comes from a local family of wine growers based in San Asensio. His aim is to make original and distinctive wines which also respect their origins – Rioja – but with a modern slant. Oscar was the first person in Spain to create a barrel fermented rosé wine. He continues to produce innovative wines which are highly acclaimed and rewarded around the world, and often used as benchmark examples by the Rioja Institute.

Oscar has undertaken several research projects, both on his own behalf and for the benefit of the wider winemaking world; these include the role of micro-oxygenation in winemaking, and the development of ‘smart’ vats where the Carbon Dioxide produced by fermentation is used to pump over the must.

Vineyard & Climate

La Rioja DOCa is located in the centre of Northern Spain, nestled in the valley of the Ebro and sheltered by two mountain ranges from the cold northerly winds and fierce southerly winds that sweep over the Iberian plateau. The valley has many different soil types, including ferrous, calcareous and alluvial. Bodegas Tobía manage 80 hectares of old, low yielding vineyards, planted in 15 communes across the region. This allows them to create wines of great quality, showing the complexity, originality and essence of Rioja and its indigenous grape varieties.

Oscar Tobía Blanco Reserva
Grapes selected from vineyards well over 50 years of age. Bouquet of citrus, tropical fruit, and honey with a delicate layer of white flowers. Very good acidity amongst rich unctuous textures

Tobía Graciano
100% made from the rare indigenous grape Graciano. Intensely fragrant, with good structure and polished tannins

Alma de Tobía – ‘Soul of Tobía’
A powerful and original expression of the region. Oscar prefers not to follow the ‘Gran Reserva’ route, finding the regulations too restrictive.

Alma de Tobía Blanco
Barrel fermented and aged, this is a full bodied white wine, with incredible concentration and minerality. Malvasia 50%, Viura 50%

Alma de Tobía Rosado
The first barrel-fermented Rioja Rosado – deep, dense, with fantastic texture and fruit. Tempranillo, Graciano, Others 

Alma de Tobía Tinto
Made from 50-year-old Tempranillo vines 90%, and 10% of 40-year-old Garnacha – this is an exquisite Rioja, full, rich and broad
