History & Philosophy
As the land acquired in 1988 for the establishment of vineyards by Tony & Susie Parkinson sat on foothills at the base of Penny’s Hill, east of McLaren Vale, so the vineyard was named. In 1991 they planted the initial narrow-rows of Shiraz, aimed at minimum crops for maximum quality, and with the 1995 vintage the decision was made to bottle and label a small quantity of wine under the distinctive ‘red dot’ packaging. Behind the slogan 'Proudly Australian. More so McLaren Vale', Penny’s Hill is now an established premium estate producer of award-winning, fruit driven wines which reflect the outstanding diversity of terroir upon which McLaren Vale has grown its reputation.
Vineyard & Climate
Proximity to the ocean and a backdrop of gently folding hills generates for McLaren Vale a true maritime climate. This in combination with an ancient and diverse geology, ensures generous, elegant and flavoursome wines. Penny’s Hill vineyards are hand-tended and hand-pruned with careful canopy management. Located on three estate sites over varied soil types, including black Bay of Biscay, the estate has built an enviable reputation for highly rated Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Merlot grapes. The appointment of winemaker Alexia Roberts, a young, passionate and experienced enthusiast for the region, marks an exciting new era for Penny’s Hill - 26 years on from its foundation.
