The Drinks Business Green Awards is a leading program that gives recognition in the drinks industry on a global scale, for the purpose of increasing awareness about environmental issues in the beverages sector, recognising and awarding those who lead the way in the field of sustainability and environmental performance.

The Drinks Business Green Awards Lifetime Achievement distinction recognises the winner for having excelled throughout their career in furthering environmental, sustainable or ethical practices in the drinks industry to the benefit and education of others.

About José Roquette:

José Holtreman Roquette was born in Lisbon on 22 September 1936. He began his career in 1958 at Banco Espírito Santo, becoming a member of the executive board in 1968. Later on, he was a founder and shareholder of the Espírito Santo group, a relationship he maintained until the end of the 1980s.

In 1973, he and Joaquim Bandeira founded Finagra, the company that acquired Herdade do Esporão with the mission of producing premium wines in Alentejo. In 1985, the "Esporão" brand was born with its first vintage. At the time, the decision was made to build a winery and cellar adapted to an ambitious growth plan, with the aim of implementing innovative environmental criteria, namely regarding impact on the landscape, reducing pollution and noise, saving water and energy and creating an operational space that was safe for all workers. This first version of what would become a growth strategy geared towards sustainability was considered a strange way of doing business by Portuguese industry leaders in the 1980s, but it was crucial to establish Esporão as an innovative brand. In 1992, José Roquette became the sole shareholder and hired a new CEO to help fulfil his vision.
